Non-Toxic Kitchen Items
You would think everything that touches your food is non-toxic, right? Plastic is a huge toxin that can affect your body and is found almost everywhere you find food. From plastic food packaging in the food store, to water bottles and food storage containers, it is hard to escape plastic if you don’t make a conscious effort to. With a lot of time and effort, I have replaced all plastic in my kitchen with glass or stainless steel alternatives. Not only are these alternatives better for you in the long run, they are also better for our environment.
Non-Stick items can easily be replaced with stainless steel, and great quality stainless steel like All Clad will last you, literally, forever. The secret to cooking on stainless steel pans is to start with the heat low, and cook slow. A bit of butter/ghee/coconut oil/avocado oil/vegan butter on a low flame until the pan is coated is how I start cooking my meals. Stainless steel cookie sheets can be greased, sprayed, or you can use this unbleached parchment paper (to avoid chemicals from the bleach in white parchment) to avoid having to clean the pan as much between uses.
For wood items such as cutting boards and cooking utensils, I prefer olive wood, as olive wood items are found in 1 solid piece (no glues that your food may come into contact with) and are previously oiled with olive oil. All the pieces I’ve found are also made in Italy. I do like organic bamboo, but find it doesn’t hold up as well as the olive wood over time.
I replaced our toaster oven with the Cuisinart Smart Steam Convection oven, which does not have a non stick coating inside. Who knew that almost all toaster ovens (and small kitchen appliances) had a non stick coating inside? This is why I prefer the Instant Pot over any other electric pressure cooker, as the inner pot is stainless steel.
I also switched out our dinnerware and glasses. I had no idea that most glazes on ceramic contain lead. We were also unknowingly using leaded glasses for every day use! I switched all of our dinnerware and drinking glasses to La Rochere glass, which is lead free.
With my constant research, I often have friends and family asking what I use in the kitchen. I have compiled the below list of some of my favorite items!
Cookware and Cooking Accessories
Kids Dinnerware
Food Storage
